Moshfegh wastes no time in thrusting the reader into an intense world of brutality and upheaval as she introduces the reader to Lapvona, an entirely gruesome and corrupt land. Her descriptions are vivid and unapologetic, leaving little room for ambiguity or escape.

The story is set in the 1500s and centers around the lives of Marek, a young man burdened with physical deformities and emotional challenges. Jude, his abusive father, lives in the medieval village of Lapvona at the foot of the hill, on top of which the lord of the land Villiam resides in his stone manor. When tragedy strikes, Marek is taken by Villiam, the childish and cruel lord of Lapvona, whose palace starkly contrasts the drought-ridden village that his estate towers over.

Their intertwined journey becomes the focal point of the novel, where dark secrets and twisted relationships take center stage. As the villagers struggle to survive, Villiam's callous actions highlight the stark divide between the oppressor and the oppressed.

"Marek guessed that Villiam could use his wealth to influence God's will. That was the way things worked, Marek thought. If you didn't have money, you had to be good."

Power dynamics and a sense of difference are laced within the web of relationships the characters encounter throughout the story. The author skillfully portrays the complexities of these relationships, presenting them in a way that intrigues and disturbs the audience.

The motivations of Moshfegh's characters and the significance of their actions are often explicitly spelled out, leaving little room for interpretation. This lack of ambiguity, combined with the heavy-handedness of the narrative, hinders reader engagement and immersion in the story.

The author highlights the fact that religion destabilizes characters and contributes to their downfall instead of enriching their lives. With the exception of those who find peace in a more personalized spirituality connected to the natural world, all of the characters fall victim to the manipulation of theology.

Moshfegh's unflinching portrayal of violence and depravity can be overwhelming. Those seeking a more lighthearted or conventional read may find themselves put off by the book's dark and unsettling nature.

"Lapvona" was a challenging, but thought-provoking read. The novel showcases Ottessa Moshfegh's ability to navigate the darkest corners of the human psyche. With its oddities, unsettling themes, and disorienting narrative, the book pushes readers to confront uncomfortable truths about the human condition.
